More vacations, less money

I’ve hardly been home from my parents’ house in Salt Lake City and I’ve already agreed to four more trips in the next 6 months. It seems every time I commit to staying home and being frugal, another fun opportunity comes along and I jump on board.

How can I afford it?

Well, first of all, I’m not going very far. Two of the above 4 trips are within my home province, and one of those is being partially paid for by work. Want to save cash on travel? Make sure it doesn’t require a plane ticket, only lasts 3 days, and the cost is split with other traveling parties. The other two trips are still relatively small, as I vowed to stick to only one continent and less than $4,000 in my 2013 travels. I’d stay wholly within Canada if I could, but I’m rapidly running out of places to see (you know what I mean), but there’s still much of the USA I haven’t visited.

I actually really love traveling the USA. As I’m sure you know, there’s always cheap holidays to Vegas to be had, and if you take my previous suggestion to make a road-trip with friends, its one country that has a lot to offer. To date, I’ve only been to 8 different states, which means I still have a lot to go. I’ll admit there’s some I’m not that interested in, but I can certainly think of at least a dozen that are on my must-see list.

I book nearly all my trips via Expedia.com. I find they usually have the best prices, or at least the same prices as other discount travel websites.

At this point I’ve already spent $1,064 on travel, which means I only have $2,936 to last me for the rest of the year — and since we’re only about 8 weeks in, I’m already nervous about sticking to the budget. I still think I can do it, provided I don’t add any more planned vacations to my itinerary. That shouldn’t be a problem at this point, work only gives me so many vacation days =\

  2. I don’t know where you get these GIFs but I frickin’ love them. As soon as I got home from Thailand (like literally the day we got home) I started looking at flights to India. I’m addicted! I need to go someplace else soon!

  3. At first I couldn’t tell if that was a dog or a goat. I know how you can finance these trips: come to the US, buy a bunch of clothes for less than what you pay in Canada and sell them up there! As long as there’s not tax/custom issues…

  4. When I was working and had lots of business trip I arranged most of them on Thursday-Friday and flew back on Sunday night. A great way to get a cheap city trip and you are already at destination at 5pm on Friday!

  5. Almost all of my vacations in recent years are the weekend road trip types. This summer will be the first time in a quite a while I go on an extended cross-country vacation.

  6. I hope you have some great trips! Travel is worth it in my opinion. At least you are budgeting for it!

  7. ah, travelling! It`s an expensive hobby, but it`s totally worth it! So far I´ve only been to another city in Norway in 2013, but I plan on visiting at least 2 other places in Norway this year, and then I`ve booked a 2 week vacation on the Canary Islands <3 this summer.. aaand then I might visit Budapest in the fall. Hope you can get the most out of your travel money!
